Every technologist must visit a retirement center as a mere observer or volunteer. I have been donating some of my time during the weekends helping out at a nearby retirement community with things like setting up a TV antenna and configuring TV remotes - any essential technology that the elderly use and is disregarded by the younger generation - basic tv instead of 4k, or phone instead of some Max smartphone. Besides electronic hearing aids and wheelchairs, nothing innovative in the modern tech industry is helping older adults (surely not VR or Metaverse). But helping them with their wheelchair, the TV remote, or just listening to them is a massive deal to them and me personally. I learned that as I got so technologically advanced in my career with computers, it is the simple and basic things that can bring more joy and value to someone’s life.
